Many immigrants, refugees, and asylees arrive in the United States unable to read or write. On top of the other obstacles they face, they cannot navigate public transportation, locate addresses, fill out a job application, read street signs, or even use a telephone. Therefore, ACANA has developed adult education classes that teach basic reading, writing, and math skills to illiterate or semi-illiterate adults. ACANA also offers computer literacy classes and workshops.

The purpose of the program is to assist illiterate adults improve and leverage their reading and writing skills. The program helps to reduce the high unemployment rates in our target areas and reduce the number of people who receive public assistance. The program also encourages some participants to aspire to further their education.

Computer Training Program

Many immigrants, refugees, and asylees arrive with little or no background in computers, which limits their ability to find and apply for jobs, among other things. ACANA runs two Computer Education classes: one teach to basic use and application, and one to teach networking, assembly, and repairs. These classes are open to all age groups. ACANA has a well-equipped computer lab and excellent instructors.

Parent University

ACANA has participated in the School District of Philadelphia's Parent University since 2011. Parent University is designed to assist parents in supporting their children to achieve academic success. It provides parents who have children within the Philadelphia School District with the knowledge, skills, and resources that are needed to be more actively engaged in their child's education. The program is designed to support parents in navigating the educational process and encourages them to collaborate with schools and take advantage of the many opportunities that are available to them. It also serves to empower parents to achieve their own academic and personal goals. Parents can attend classes or workshops for free. Here at ACANA we offer ESL courses twice a week (Tuesday & Wednesday) as well as a Computer Literacy class that meets twice a week (Monday &Thursday). We also hold Parent University workshops in collaboration with some of our partner organizations.
